As many members of MH, U/O and Hauntings will know, I lived in a haunted house in the mid '90's and was a visitor there from 1989-1997.
The house was a council, chalet type property and was occupied from 1960 by my ex husbands family. They were a fiesty family; 2 girls and 3 boys, the second youngest boy died at the age of 5 from a heart defect in 1975. Over the years, the family were caught up in disputes, mostly among themselves, but remained a close knit family despite this.
I came into the family aged 16 in 1989 and became aware very quickly that something else was in the house. In the spring of 1990 my ex and I saw someone standing at the bedroom door from the corner of our eyes and both jumped up at the same time, running to see who was in the house. I had seen an old person with grey hair, but neither of us had seen what sex they were. We went outside to take the washing off the line, a while later, and both heard the distinctive sound of the old fashioned microwave bell. My ex turned to me and said, 'You cooking something?' I wasn't and we both ran inside to find the microwave unplugged!! As we stood puzzled, we heard a loud banging on the floor from our bedroom. I really thought someone was playing a trick, but there was no one in any of the 3 bedrooms and nowhere to hide. The last thing we heard that morning was the sound of someone rattling the cutlery in the drawer, violently.
My mother-in-law was very aware something was in the house and told us of light switches flicking up and down, TV's coming on in all the rooms and strange sounds, all of which I experienced for myself at a later date.
In 1994 I saw for the first and last time, an apparition in our bedroom. I had gone to bed during a family argument and felt out of place. My father in law was leaving for another woman and the shouting and tears got to much for me. My ex came up to bed soon after and as soon as his head hit the pillow, he fell asleep. I lay awake wondering how his mum was going to cope, when I noticed smoke by the curtains. Thinking my ex hadn't put out his cigarette, I sat up to put it out when I realised there was no cigarette and the smoke was still. I stared at it in disbelief as parts of the smoke moved to reveal the face of an old man and as a feeling of calm washed over me, he floated past!
The most amazing thing I witnessed was just after I moved in permanantly in 1995. There was tension and sadness in the house and I watched a big heavy photo album fly off a shelf and hit my ex who was on the other side of the room!
We would get the smell of onions that would hang in one spot, which was cold, and the spot would move slowly then vanish. One summer, the smell was just like Christmas pudding!!! But that was the only time.
I have my idea who the old man was, my ex's grandad on his Dad's side, who died from gangreen some years previous when the kids were young. I can't say the reasons I think it was him as it's too personal to the family.
My ex now lives abroad with his mum and her new husband. I have no idea who lives in that house now, but I will never forget my experiences there.
