New Year's eve 1990, my ex and I offered to babysit for his sisters kids and let her go out and enjoy a party. We let the kids fall asleep watching TV and we went upstairs to dress the beds at around ten minutes to midnight. While I was just pulling the covers back, ready to put the kids in their beds, my ex went to go downstairs to bring them up to bed, but he froze on the top step.
He turned to me, as white as a sheet and said in a shaky voice 'There's a man downstairs.' He grabbed a snooker cue and ran downstairs into the dining room while I checked the girls were okay.
The property was a maisonette in Pitsea, Essex and had a front door at the bottom of the stairs facing south and patio doors in the lounge, also facing south. The man had come from the lounge, passed the stairs and into the dining room which lead to the kitchen. There was no escape from here, not even the windows had large openings and were on the 1st floor anyway.
We were sure the man must be in the kitchen, but no one was there. The girls were fine and both doors were firmly locked. My ex was terrified and shook violently until his sister arrived with a neighbour at around 12.30am.
The neighbour almost collapsed as we told her what happened; she then told us that the previous New Year, the man who lived there had walked from the lounge, passed the stairs on his way to the kitchen to get some bubbly to celebrate the New Year with his wife, but he collapsed as he passed the dining table and died of a heart attack. My sister in law had literally moved in a month after his death at the end of January and this was her 1st New Year there!
