I don't know if I can truly say I've seen a ghost, but I have had some very strange things happen. This is a bit long, so I apologise ....
The first time was when OH & I were staying at The Bell Hotel, in Thorpe-Le-Soken in Essex. We had room No.6, a beautiful old room overlooking the graveyard of the church behind. This was in no way creepy. The graveyard was beautiful. The hotel is on the "main road" into Walton on the Naze and we used to like to stop off there because it was out of the way and a lovely building ... all wonky floors and tiny doors.
We stayed there a few times and the first time I had really bad nightmares about an old lady in a grey dress. She was chasing me through the coridoors and I couldn't get away.
The next time we stayed there I was woken up by someone shaking my shoulder. I sat up in bed and at first thought there was a fire because the top half of the room seemed to be covered in a kind of smokey mist. There was a feint vaccum type of sound (I can only describe it as being like, "whom whom" type of noise) which was getting louder and louder and as the noise got louder the mist started to gather itself into a corner. It was making the vague shape of a person. While all this was going on I was trying desperately to wake up OH, but he was out for the count. I was literally punching his chest to wake him up but there was no response at all.
The shape in the corner stort of started to move, although it was still forming, and I think through total fear I woke up ~ one of those "bolt upright in bed, sweating like a pig" wake-ups!
The next morning I was telling OH all about it. His response was "you watch too much ghost sh*t on TV".
It wasn't until a few months later, we were having drinks with some friends when I told them about my experience. It turns out (he let the cat out of the bag after too many beers) that OH had the same experience with me. First time he "saw" the mist and the second time he couldn't wake me up. The difference was that he saw the mist develop into a old lady in a grey dress, sitting on a chair in the corner of the room.
Fascinated by this I tried to get some background info, I was looking in a book called Haunted Places in Essex and what do you think I found.
The Bell Hotel, Thorpe le Soken.
Room 6 - a grey lady is seen sitting in a chair.
Nearly crapped my pants when I read that. I showed OH to "prove" that ghosts do exist but he STILL wouldn't have it. Said it was probably too much drink! What a git!
Men. Can't live with them. Can't dissolve them in acid and bury them in the garden!
